Branding makes perfect sense for businesses. Cultivate this look and feel, cater to your target market to get them to see you as a thought leader and invest/buy whatever it is you are selling. But the days of this only being about your business, as if it were a separate entity from you the business owner or your employees, are over. These days EVERYTHING reflects your brand. “Katy Perry the super bowl artist” is also “Katy the divorcee who married Russell Brand of all people”. These are no longer two different entities, and in your business you are synonymous with your personal, professional, and ethical decisions on every level.
How can you take the lessons of branding for business into branding for yourself? Easy! Today I will share some suggestions and pointers on how to sharpen up your personal brand.
1. Develop your professional image
One study found that: Only 15 percent of hiring managers say nearly all or most job seekers have the skills and traits their companies are looking for in candidates.
- Improve your appearance with a proper diet, exercise, and sleep
- Always dress appropriately
- Use professional photos
- Craft an email signature (Photo, Name, Title, Company, Phone, Website, Email, Address, Social Profiles w/icons)
2. Create Consistency
The value of a brand, personal or professional, comes from consumers who believe the promise that brand makes to them.
- Commit to work routines and stick to them
- Go in to the office every day at the same time and leave at the same time
- Be consistent with the time you take to respond to emails and phone calls
- Be courteous in your personal life with respect to canceling plans and being timely
3. Creativity is key!
Studies show 75% of people globally think they are not living up to their creative potential. Creativity is not limited to the arts! Get creative by asking yourself these questions:
- Is there a more interesting way I could present my information online and in person?
- Do I know who is doing really innovative things in my industry? Have I explored their stuff?
- Have I done a brand audit of myself? Are there things I could/should address?
4. Be memorable
- Send thank you notes
- Research companies and people before interacting with them so you are in the know
- Highlight things that make you unique (hobbies, interests etc.)
